Quantum Explanations for Interference Effects in Engineering Decision Making

Engineering practice routinely involves decision making under uncertainty. Much of this decision making entails reconciling multiple pieces of information to form a suitable model of uncertainty. As more information is collected, one expectedly makes better and better decisions. However, conditional probability assessments made by human decision makers, as new information arrives does not always follow expected trends and instead exhibits inconsistencies. Understanding them is necessary for a better modeling of the cognitive processes taking place in their mind, whether it be the designer or the end-user. Doing so can result in better products and product features. Quantum probability has been used in the literature to explain many commonly observed deviations from the classical probability such as: question order effect, response replicability effect, Machina and Ellsberg paradoxes and the effect of positive and negative interference between events.

Mobility in the automotive and transportation sectors has been experiencing a period of unprecedented evolution. A growing need for efficient, clean and safe mobility has increased momentum toward sustainable technologies in these sectors. Toward this end, battery electric vehicles have drawn keen interest and their market share is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, especially in light-duty applications such as passenger cars. Although the battery electric vehicles feature high performance and zero tailpipe emission characteristics, economic and technical issues such as battery cost, driving range, recharging time and infrastructure remain main hurdles that need to be fully addressed. In particular, the low power density of the battery limits its broad adoption in heavy-duty applications such as class 8 semi-trailer trucks due to the required size and weight of the battery and electric motor.

Fatigue Endurance Limit of Fasteners in Automotive Application

Fasteners, commonly used in automotive industry, play an important role in the safety and reliability of the vehicle structural system. In practical application, bolted joints would never undergo fully reversed loading; there always will be positive mean stress on bolt. The mean stress has little influence on the fatigue life if the maximum stress is lower than a threshold which is near the yield stress of the bolt. However, when the sum of the mean stress and the stress amplitude exceeds the threshold, the endurance limit stress amplitude decreases fast as the mean stress increases. The purpose of this paper is to research the fatigue endurance limit of a fastener and establish the threshold for safe design in automotive application. In order to obtain the fatigue endurance limit at different mean stress levels, various mechanical tests were performed on M12x1.75 and M16x1.5 Class 10.9 fasteners using MTS test systems.

Large-Angle Full-Field Strain Measurement of Small-Sized Objects Based on the Multi-Camera DIC Test System

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technology is a powerful tool in the field of experimental mechanics to obtain the full-field deformation/strain information of an object. It has been rapidly applied in industry in recent years. However, for the large-angle full-field strain measurement of small-sized cylindrical objects, it’s still a challenge to the DIC accurate measurement due to its small size and curved surface. In this paper, a measurement method based on the multi-camera DIC system is proposed to study the compressive performance of small-sized cylindrical materials. Three cameras form two stereo DIC measurement systems (1 and 2 cameras, and 2 and 3 cameras), each of which measures a part of the object. By calibrating three cameras at the same time, two stereos DIC coordinate systems can be unified to one coordinate system. Then match the two sets of DIC measurement data together to achieve large-angle measurement of the cylindrical surface.

Analyzing the Impact of Electric Vehicles on Power Losses and Voltage Profile in Power Distribution Systems

As the number of electric vehicles (EVs) within society rapidly increase, the concept of maximizing its efficiency within the electric smart grid becomes crucial. This research presents the impacts of integrating EV charging infrastructures within a smart grid through a vehicle to grid (V2G) program. It also observes the circulation of electric charge within the system so that the electric grid does not become exhausted during peak hours. This paper will cover several different case studies and will analyze the best and worst scenarios for the power losses and voltage profiles in the power distribution system. Specifically, we seek to find the optimal location as well as the ideal number of EVs in the distribution system while minimizing its power losses and optimizing its voltage profile. Verification of the results are primarily conducted using GUIs created on MATLAB.

Event-Triggered Model Predictive Control for Autonomous Vehicle with Rear Steering

This paper proposes a new nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) for autonomous vehicle path tracking problem. The vehicle is equipped with active rear steering, allowing independent control of front and rear steering. Traditional NMPC, which runs at fixed sampling rate, has been shown to provide satisfactory control performance in this problem. However, the high throughput of NMPC limits its implementation in production vehicle. To address this issue, we propose a novel event-triggered NMPC formulation, where the NMPC is triggered to run only when the actual states deviate from prediction beyond certain threshold. In other words, the event-triggered NMPC will formulate and solve a constrained optimal control problem only if it is enabled by a trigger event. When NMPC is not triggered, the optimal control sequence computed from last NMPC instance is shifted to determine the control action.

EV Battery Charger Impacts on Power Distribution Transformers Due to Harmonics

Increasing the demand for EV charging has increased the burden and accretion of the power quality issues. Harmonic voltages and currents have a significant negative influence on power system components, specifically power transformers. The voltage and current harmonics created by EV chargers and their impacts on power transformers have been discussed in this paper, and an approach is proposed to reduce such harmonics in the system. For this purpose, firstly, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of a typical EV charger is evaluated. Then an analysis is performed utilizing Fast Fourier Transform (FTT) to extract individual harmonics. To this end, this paper addresses the power quality issues on the power transformers by implementing a passive filter. The harmonic voltages and currents were measured on different levels of charging loads. The simulation results show that more than 30% of total harmonic distortions were reduced to 1.16% using a passive filter.

Damage-Induced Dynamic Tooth Contact Forces in Spur Gears with Root Cracks

A finite element/contact mechanics formulation is used to analyze the dynamic tooth forces that arise from damage-induced vibrations in spur gear pairs. Tooth root crack damage of varying sizes are analyzed for a wide range of speeds that include resonant gear speeds. The added localized compliance from tooth root crack damage leads to a re-distribution of the forces on the individual gear teeth in mesh. At speeds away from resonance, smaller dynamic forces occur on the damaged tooth and larger dynamic forces occur on the tooth that engages immediately after it. These dynamic tooth contact forces cause additional transient dynamic response in the gear pair. For certain speeds and sufficiently large tooth root cracks, the damage-induced dynamic response causes large enough vibration that tooth contact loss nonlinearity occurs. For some speeds near resonance, the damage-induced vibrations cause teeth that normally lose contact to remain in contact due to vibration.

Fault Diagnosis and Prediction in Automotive Systems with Real-Time Data Using Machine Learning

In the automotive industry, a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is commonly employed to signify a failure or error in a vehicle system. To identify the root cause that has triggered a particular fault, a technician or engineer will typically run diagnostic tests and analyses. This type of analysis can take a significant amount of time and resources at the cost of customer satisfaction and perceived quality. Predicting an impending error allows for preventative measures or actions which might mitigate the effects of the error. Modern vehicles generate data in the form of sensor readings accessible through the vehicle’s Controller Area Network (CAN). Such data is generally too extensive to aid in analysis and decision making unless machine learning-based methods are used. This paper proposes a method utilizing a recurrent neural network (RNN) to predict an impending fault before it occurs through the use of CAN data.

EV Penetration for Minimizing Power System Emissions

This work illustrates the potential of Electric Vehicles (EVs) as a grid support tool that will lower carbon emissions from both the energy production sector and the transportation sector. EVs can provide peak shaving power to the grid while discharging and valley filling power while charging to flatten the total load curve of a distribution system. The idea is called Vehicle to Grid (V2G). Flattening the load curve will allow utility providers to delay upgrading, or the purchase of new power generation stations, as well as best utilize renewable energy resources that may be uncontrollable in nature. Electrical energy production and transportation combined accounted for 2,534 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in the US in 2019. Utilizing EVs for transportation as well as grid support will decrease this figure in each sector. This technology may pave the way to cleaner, more reliable, cost effective energy systems.

Design and Analysis of an Acrylic Front of a Novel Mechanical Highway Billboard

Billboards are an effective instrument of advertisement at areas with high traffic flow such as alongside highways. They provide information to drivers for food, fuel, lodging, attractions, etc. A novel mechanical billboard has been conceived recently which contains rolling tubes to alternate as many as twelve printed signs. It has the advantages of both flexibility and cost-effectiveness. A container is built to protect the mechanism from the weather elements. To allow the displayed messages to be visible, a transparent acrylic front is installed. Due to its mechanical properties, it is a challenging task in designing a functional acrylic front. A reinforcement is selected to counter the weak flexural rigidity of the front during winds. On the other hand, the reinforced acrylic front must maintain sufficient visibility.

Decision-Making for Autonomous Mobility Using Remotely Sensed Terrain Parameters in Off-Road Environments

Off-road vehicle operation requires constant decision-making under great uncertainty. Such decisions are multi-faceted and range from acquisition decisions to operational decisions. A major input to these decisions is terrain information in the form of soil properties. This information needs to be propagated to path planning algorithms that augment them with other inputs such as visual terrain assessment and other sensors. In this sequence of steps, many resources are needed, and it is not often clear how best to utilize them. We present an integrated approach where a mission’s overall performance is measured using a multiattribute utility function. This framework allows us to evaluate the value of acquiring terrain information and then its use in path planning. The computational effort of optimizing the vehicle path is also considered and optimized. We present our approach using the data acquired from the Keweenaw Research Center terrains and present some results.

Human Body Orientation from 2D Images

This work presents a method to estimate the human body orientation using 2D images from a person view; the challenge comes from the variety of human body poses and appearances. The method utilizes OpenPose neural network as a human pose detector module and depth sensing module. The modules work together to extract the body orientation from 2D stereo images. OpenPose is proven to be efficient in detecting human body joints, defined by COCO dataset, OpenPose can detect the visible body joints without being affected by backgrounds or other challenging factors. Adding the depth data for each point can produce rich information to the process of 3D construction for the detected humans. This 3D point’s setup can tell more about the body orientation and walking direction for example. The depth module used in this work is the ZED camera stereo system which uses CUDA for high performance depth computation.

CAE Correlation of Sealing Pressure of a Press-in-Place Gasket

The Press-in-Place (PIP) gasket is a static face seal with self-retaining feature, which is used for the mating surfaces of engine components to maintain the reliability of the closed system under various operating conditions. Its design allows it to provide enough contact pressure to seal the internal fluid as well as prevent mechanical failures. Insufficient sealing pressure will lead to fluid leakage, consequently resulting in engine failures. A test fixture was designed to simulate the clamp load and internal pressure condition on a gasket bolted joint. A sensor pad in combination with TEKSCAN equipment was used to capture the overall and local pressure distribution of the PIP gasket under various engine loading conditions. Then, the test results were compared with simulated results from computer models. Through the comparisons, it was found that gasket sealing pressure of test data and CAE data shows good correlations in all internal pressure cases when the bolt load was 500 N.

The Study of the Effective Contact Area of Suction Cup

As the industry moves further into the automotive age, the failure of the cup during the transportation of the parts during the assembly process is costly. Among them, the effective contact area of the suction cup could influence the significant availability of the pressure, which is necessary to investigate the truth. The essential objective for this research is trying to improve the effectiveness of the suction cups during gripers work in company’s industry. In this research, the real work condition is simulated by the experimental setup to find the influence of the effective contact area. In this paper, the proper methodology to measure the effective area by testing different size cups under different conditions is described. The results are verified by the digital image correlation (DIC) technique.

Nonlinear System Identification of Variable Oil Pump for Model-Based Controls and Diagnostics

This paper presents nonlinear system identification of a variable oil pump for model-based controls and diagnostics of advanced internal combustion engines. The variable oil pump offers great benefits over the conventional fixed displacement oil pump in terms of fuel efficiency and functional optimality. However, to fully benefit from the variable oil pump, an accurate mathematical model that describes its dynamic behavior is foundational to develop an accurate and robust oil pressure control and diagnostic. Toward this end, Hammerstein and Wiener models that consist of a nonlinear static block followed by a linear dynamic block and a linear dynamic block followed by a nonlinear static block, respectively are developed. Under different operating conditions (oil temperature and engine speed), the oil pressure (output) is measured with the multilevel duty cycle (input) of the flow control valve.

Defining the Boundary Conditions of the CFR Engine under MON Conditions, and Evaluating Chemical Kinetic Predictions at RON and MON for PRFs

Expanding upon the authors’ previous work which utilized a GT-Power model of the Cooperative Fuels Research (CFR) engine under Research Octane Number (RON) conditions, this work defines the boundary conditions of the CFR engine under Motored Octane Number (MON) test conditions. The GT-Power model was validated against experimental CFR engine data for primary reference fuel (PRF) blends between 60 and 100 under standard MON conditions, defining the full range of interest of MON for gasoline-type fuels. The CFR engine model utilizes a predictive turbulent flame propagation sub-model, and a chemical kinetic solver for the end-gas chemistry. The validation was performed simultaneously for thermodynamic and chemical kinetic parameters to match in-cylinder pressure conditions, burn rate, and knock point prediction with experimental data, requiring only minor modifications to the flame propagation model from previous model iterations.

The sending and receiving devices are required to be on the same network - which involves reliable and secure connection. This allows the sending of the URL of the chosen feature to the server provider, which will then connect to the receiver embedded electronics where the authentication process that protects Digital Rights Management (DRM) is established. In the era of developing autonomous and luxury vehicles, this technology has the potential to add a new dimension of in-vehicle entertainment that could come very close to the home experience.

Intelligent Voice Activated Drone(s) for in-Vehicle Services and Real-Time Predictions

Today, commercially available drones have limited use-cases in the rapidly evolving community. However, with advances in drone and software technology, it is possible to utilize these aerial machines to solve problems in a variety of industries such as mining, medical, construction, and law enforcement. For example, in order to reduce time of investigation, Indiana State Police are currently utilizing ad-hoc commercial drones to reconstruct crash scenes for insurance and legal purposes. In this paper, we illustrate how to effectively integrate drones for in-vehicle services and real-time prediction for automotive applications. In order to accomplish this, we first integrate simpler controls such as voice-commands to control the drone from the vehicle. Next, we build smart prediction software that monitors vehicle behavior and reacts in real-time to collisions.

Tooth Mesh Modeling of Spur Gears with Tooth Root Crack Damage Using a Finite Element/Contact Mechanics Approach

Motivated by accurate representations in gear dynamics models, this work analyzes the force-deflection relationship between spur gear pairs when the gear teeth have tooth root cracks. A finite element/contact mechanics approach is used to accurately capture the elastic deformations of the gear mesh incorporating kinematic gear motion; elastic deflections of the teeth, root, and blank; and elastic contact between the mating gear teeth. Tooth root crack damage of fixed sizes are analyzed, and the resulting static transmission error and mesh stiffness are calculated. These FE/CM model outputs are relatively insensitive to important gear crack geometry, including the initial crack location, the path it follows, and its final location. Crack-induced changes in static transmission error and mesh stiffness are driven by the remaining amount of the tooth that is healthy. Calculations of average-slope and local-slope mesh stiffness are included because both are used in gear dynamic models.
